North of Paris — Hephaestus Road-Forge

The mercy rail ended at a cracked siding where the heat dome had buckled the last ten kilometres of track into a mirage. Beyond it, the road-forge waited: a Hephaestian convoy of living metal and blackened trucks, awnings stretched over a mobile foundry that smelled of coke, sweat, and the thick mineral musk of gods who worked with their hands.

A smith met them at the barrier. He was human from the neck up and the wrists down; between, bronze had grown through him in plates and rivets, a torso like armour that had decided to be flesh. When he breathed, tiny vents along his ribs exhaled forge-heat. His cock, when he shifted, was sheathed in a sliding cage of the same living metal — not modesty, temperature control.

“Rail’s dead to the coast,” he said. “Road-forge takes you to the ChPennyl packet for a labour tax. Node under the lead truck needs a full thermal cycle. Two options: shift-haul on the bellows line, or condenser contact on the anvil plate. Pays berths, water, and a sealed crate-ride for your child-tag.”

Penny had the clipboard open before he’d finished. “Named. Limits. Spectacle pair can take anvil contact. Selective pair — haul or watch only. Clinician documents. No unmarked spend. No branding. Temporary tags.”

The smith’s eyes crinkled. “Athena’d like you.” He tapped the lead truck. Something vast under the chassis answered with a bass note that made Henry’s teeth hurt. “Anvil’s this way.”

The anvil plate was not metaphor. A slab of dark bronze, waist-high, veined with dull red heat, sat under a canopy where the air rippled. Cables thick as wrists ran from its base into the convoy’s heart. Two sets of handholds. A shallow gutter for collection. A gauge already ticking too fast.

Jean stripped to the waist and hopped up to sit on the edge with the ease of someone mounting a desk. Penny followed, then paused and looked at Henry and Kat.

“Watch post is there,” she said, pointing to a shaded crate stack with a clear sightline and an exit. “Seal holds. If the heat gets ugly we stop.”

Kat nodded. Henry set his back to the crates. Helen stood with her pen and a bottle of ration water, already noting ambient temperature and the smith’s vent-pattern.

The smith unclipped his cock-cage. The metal folded back like petals. He was thick, heavy, the shaft traced with fine bronze filigree that glowed faintly as blood — or whatever he used — moved under it. He did not posture. He clipped Penny’s temporary tag to a ring on his belt and waited.

“On your fronts,” Jean directed. “Breasts and bellies to the plate. Cycle of three. He fucks the gutter spend into the chPennyls, not into us, unless we say. Hands on handholds. Penny, you first for depth; I’ll take the friction count.”

Penny lay forward along the warm bronze. The heat bit, then sank into her like a second pulse. Her nipples tightened hard against the metal; milk started almost at once and ran into the etched chPennyls. Jean lay beside her, close enough their shoulders touched, and reached down between Penny’s legs to open her with two fingers.

“Tag green,” Penny said, voice rough. “Entry allowed — cunt only. No throat this round. Pull out for spend.”

The smith mounted the step behind the anvil and pushed into Penny in one slow, measured thrust.

Penny’s mouth opened soundlessly. The plate drank her shudder. Jean’s fingers stayed on Penny’s clit, rubbing tight circles while the smith fucked in deep strokes that made the gauge needles dance. Each time his hips met Penny’s ass, the filigree on his cock brightened; each time he drew back, the chPennyls under Penny’s belly ran with her wetness and milk.

“Cycle one,” Jean said, and bit Penny’s shoulder through a grin as Penny came, clenching hard enough the smith cursed in a language like struck iron. Gauge dropped. The convoy’s heart slowed a fraction.

He pulled out, slick and shining, and pushed into Jean without ceremony when she said, “Now me — same limits.”

Jean took him with a punched-out breath, forehead to the bronze, hands white on the holds. Penny, still twitching, reached under and worked Jean’s clit with the same ruthless metronome Jean usually owned. The smith’s rhythm stayed industrial — deep, even, heat rolling off his vented ribs in waves. Jean came on the third stroke after Penny’s fingers found the exact angle, a long broken sound, milk spraying the plate in thin arcs. Gauge dropped again.

“Cycle three,” the smith grated. “Need spend on the gutter. Both of you — hands.”

They turned enough to get their hands on him, Penny’s fist at the base, Jean’s mouth on the head for six wet strokes, then off. He spent into the anvil’s gutter in thick, luminous ropes that the bronze drank greedily. The gauge slammed green. Under the truck, the vast heart settled into a working idle that shook dust from the awnings.

Penny’s thighs were shaking too hard to stand. The smith helped her down with a careful hand under her elbow, wiped the plate with a clean rag, and resheathed himself. He returned the tag.

“Berths in the third truck. Water chits. Crate rides sealed between the coolant tanks — Fury-mark already on the bracket. You did it clean.” His gaze flicked to Henry and Kat. “Selective. Good. Forge doesn’t need everyone on the anvil. Needs people who know where the edge is.”

Helen wrote: Hephaestian anvil-condenser: effective. Bonded pair sequential entry + gutter spend = full thermal cycle. Selective watch stable. No brand attempt. Note filigree glow correlates with lock-conductivity.

They rode north in the third truck with the child-tag crate sweating cold between coolant tanks. Jean slept with her boot touching Penny’s. Henry watched the road through a slit in the canvas and felt the cabinet stay shut despite the heat, despite the smell of sex and iron still in his hair from proximity.

Kat said, quietly, “Boys have swimming on Tuesdays.”

“I know,” Henry said.

“We’re going to make Tuesday.”

“I know.”
