Global Pullback — The Sky Clears, the Heat Arrives
While nests logged their swallows and Furies wiped bronze clean of the worst human hungers, the atmosphere kept its own ledger.
For a century, air travel had done more than move bodies. Jet exhaust and contrails had seeded a thin, dirty veil—sulphates, particulates, the faint persistent haze scientists once called global dimming. That veil had bounced a fraction of the sun’s energy back to space. It had been an accidental brake, a negative feedback loop nobody voted for and everybody used. Harvests, monsoons, city nights, the slow mathematics of ice: all of it had been running with a dirty thumb on the scale.
Then the lock finished rewriting the species’ logistics. Planes stopped flying in any ordinary sense. Mercy corridors and a few military ghosts remained; the great commercial fleets grounded, fuel chains broke, airports became waystations for surface travellers and feeding halls. Within weeks the contrail decks thinned. Within months the aerosol veil began to fade at a speed the old models had only ever treated as a thought experiment.
The brake came off.
Solar radiation reaching the lower atmosphere and the surface jumped—not by a polite fraction but by a hard, measurable step. The planet’s energy imbalance widened in real time. Regional climatic systems, already stressed, did not simply warm; they switched. Old cycles lost their anchors. New ones announced themselves with violence.
What the switch looked like
Monsoon belts stuttered and then re-drew. In some places the rains failed for weeks past their due date, then arrived as single-day deluges that peeled hillsides into the valleys. In others the wet season locked on early and refused to leave, turning floodplains into semi-permanent inland seas. Nest rotas in those zones learned to move bottles by boat inside cities that had been built for cars.
Jet stream configurations that had been merely “wavier” became stuck. Blocking highs sat over continents like lids. Under them, heat domes cooked asphalt soft and made outdoor day-feeding a medical risk after ten in the morning; locked bodies still needed their fluids, so entire districts shifted intake to night and deep shade. Adjacent troughs stalled and spun out stalled storms—rain machines that did not translate, only dumped.
Polar and high-latitude systems bled unpredictability south and north. Cold-air outbreaks slammed into super-heated seas and birthed hybrid storms the old naming lists struggled to hold: medicanes with teeth, bomb cyclones that carried dust the colour of other deserts, lightning in snow that smelled of ozone and thick-sweet scent where nests rode out the dark.
Ocean surface layers stratified harder. Marine heatwaves painted the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the South China Sea in satellite reds. Fisheries that had fed coastal nests collapsed or migrated; the fishing boat Henry and Kat rode was already a relic of a wetter logic, its crew absolute and its nets mostly symbolic. Upwelling zones flickered. Dead-water patches grew. The triad did not stop the need to eat ordinary food—only the need to drink each other against hyperdrive.
Ice and mountains answered in lags and suddenness. Melt seasons lengthened. Rivers ran fat and early, then skinny. Glacier-fed waystations discovered their summer water was a countdown. In the Alps, where Seraina, Lea and Maja would eventually peel toward Zürich, the high paths became races against slurry and bare rock.
Fire weather lengthened until the word “season” lost meaning in whole provinces. Smoke became a fifth fluid in the air—competing with scent, forcing masks that nests hated because they interfered with feeding, forcing choices between breath and quota.
Across the board, intense weather stopped being the exception. It became the grammar.
The new normal under a brighter sun
Locked humanity adapted the way it was already adapting: locally, erotically, bureaucratically, mythically.
Scientists who were still able to work—many of them locked, some selective, all thirsty—said the quiet part where the mesh could hear it: aviation’s accidental dimming had been masking a fraction of already-committed warming. Removing it did not create the crisis; it revealed and accelerated the underlying physics, and it did so while the species was also rewriting sex, kinship, and logistics from the ground up. Two phase-changes at once: social and climatic. Neither waited for the other to finish.
From the wide lens back toward the boat
On the water headed for the boot, the crew felt the first hints as a change in the light—harder, whiter, the kind that makes shadows ink and skin count every hour. Penny added solar load to her book without needing a lecture. Jean joked that the camera of the sky had raised its exposure. Helen thought of trauma and heat as co-morbidities: cabinets opened easier when bodies could not sleep. Kat watched the horizon shimmer and recalculated bottles. Henry stood selective and background at the rail, palm on rope, and felt the planet’s larger spike without naming it his.
Behind them, Delos baked in its myth. Ahead, Italian stone would hold the day’s heat like an oven brick. Further on, North East London would run its school gates and spare-room quotas under a sun that no longer negotiated. Further still, every regional system that had once been “weather” was auditioning for the role of permanent regime.
The planes stayed down.
The veil kept thinning.
The radiation kept climbing.
The cycles kept switching.
Nests drank anyway.
Children stayed anonymous and guarded.
The Furies kept their narrower watch.
And the long way home—land, sea, locked waystations—now ran through a climate that had stopped pretending it would wait for anyone’s rota to stabilise.
The new normal was prime flesh, daily fluids, mythical red lines, and a sky that had gone terrifyingly clean.
