Teeth Memo — A Crisis That Was Not Theirs

Thursday after swimming, chips still greasy on their fingers, Henry and Kat walked the boys to the corner where Kevin took over like a baton pass. Ordinary. Good.

Then the high street tightened.

A Fury full-form — bronze wings half-open, lion-hips bloody at the flank, human breasts dusted with road film, face beautiful without pity — stood over a man on his knees outside the school-supply shop. His mouth was a ruin of red. Something that might have been a consent-tag lay shredded in the gutter, fake on second glance, the kind printed to look like mercy issue and smell like shortcut.

“School-gate scent work,” the Fury said to the gathering air, not to him. “Second offence. First was Lyon season’s memo. This is teeth.”

She had already delivered them. She was delivering the sentence so the street would learn.

Helen, arriving from the other direction with a satchel of audit copies, stopped beside Henry and Kat without touching either. “Not ours,” she said, quiet. “Witness or walk?”

“Walk,” Kat said. “Boys are behind us on the corner. We don’t give them a view.”

Henry’s cabinet flinched at the blood and did not open. The lock under his collarbone stayed irrelevant, different jurisdiction. They turned their backs in a clean professional arc and blocked the sightline with their bodies until Kevin had the boys pointed at a bus advert about bread.

The man’s friends started a word about rights and community. The Fury’s wing moved a degree. The word died.

“Hard fence,” the Fury said, and launched, leaving the smell of copper and wet lion and a memo pinned to the shop’s shutter by a bronze talon-tip:

*CHILD-ADJACENT COERCION = TEETH.

NO APPEAL TO VINE.

ANALOG UNTIL MAJORITY.*

Penny would want a photo for the template file. Henry texted her the line without the blood. At Grove, Penny wrote it on the chalkboard under guest-house law and underlined TEETH twice.

Susan heard by evening from the parents’ group and closed the thread without commenting. Some education was not for the group chat.

That night in the flat above the travel agent Henry sat in the chair alone for ten minutes and named present facts until the flinch let go. Kat brought water and did not ask him to open a drawer. He didn’t.

The crisis stayed not theirs.

The fence stayed hard.

Thursday stayed swimming and chips in the memory that mattered.
