Chapter Twenty-Six
Demeter Market — Last Mile Errands
The market occupied a heat-buckled car park under wheat-stamp bunting. Lesser Demeter presence moved through it like yeast through dough — not full goddess, only the insistence that bread still mattered and clean-mother corners got shade first.
Jean and Penny went for surplus and labels. Helen went for grain-route gossip that might become London protocol. Henry and Kat went because the house needed tomatoes and because walking after a cabinet session put the body back into a city that sold fruit.
A clean mother under an umbrella accepted a crate of soft stone fruit from a locked vendor who kept his distance and his scent to himself. No conversion. Communion of logistics. Henry watched the fence hold in the wild and felt the teaching night lose another inch of jurisdiction.
At a side stall a Hephaestian tech with vented ribs and a polymer cock-cage sold portable condenser coils for home nodes. He glanced at Penny’s clipboard, at the travel marks, at Kat’s perimeter posture, and did not upsell.
“Substation on Grove’s running hot nights,” he said. “If you’ve got bonded pairs for labour tax, they pay in cold-berth credits. If you don’t, don’t. Forge doesn’t need everyone on the anvil.”
“We have a bolted spare room and boys,” Penny said.
“Then you have priorities.” He threw in a free heat-sink sticker for the terrace’s meter box anyway. “For the lintel. Can’t hurt.”
Hermes showed up as a courier on a scuffed bike with ankle-wings flickering in and out of patience. He tossed Helen a sealed flimsy without stopping.
“Audit friends at the university say the clause landed. Pottery too. No signature. No owl shit on the letterhead.” A grin at Henry. “Cabinet work smells like copper when it’s honest. You’re fine.”
He was gone into traffic before thanks formed.
They bought tomatoes, bread that had been loved by rain, nectar rations with boring labels, and a bag of apples for the boys’ lunchboxes. On the way out a siren-cousin — river, not ChPennyl — tried a low sweet note from a canal bridge and stopped when Kat looked at her. Respect or Fury-memory. Enough.
Home smelled of the same kitchen as before they left. Susan took the tomatoes without interrogation. Kevin stuck the heat-sink sticker beside the meter like a joke that was also a ward. The boys later stole apples with permission and declared the market boring, which was the correct analog review of a successful errand.
Penny logged: Demeter market: fence-compatible. Hephaestus substation optional, declined. Hermes confirm: audit language propagating. Household surplus green.
