Chapter Twenty-Four
Pottery Committee — Audit Language
The shade-sail still leaked. The table still wobbled. The faces around it had rearranged: one absence where the walk-out had been, one new member with Apollo-gold at a single earring who took notes like someone who had been sent, and the chair who looked as if she had aged a year in a week.
Susan laid Helen’s clauses on the table without naming Helen. Kevin’s university minutes had already travelled; the language arrived pre-sharpened.
“I’m not asking the studio to become monogamous,” Susan said. “I’m asking it to stop treating primary bonds as a defect in community spirit. Free-use evening slot can stay free-use. Membership cannot require unlock, scent, or overnight access. Analog-parent schedules are exempt from bonding weekends. Coercion dressed as cohesion is out of order.”
Someone started the old speech about selfishness and the new age. The gold-earring member slid a printed page across the table — occupational health adjacent, polite as a blade — and the speech stumbled.
The chair cleared her throat. “We tabled pending guidance. Guidance has arrived from more than one direction. We adopt the clauses as studio policy. Saturday slot remains allocated as is. Free-use stays on Thursday. Anyone who can’t work inside that frame can found a different table.”
It was not a triumph with trumpets. It was a fence post sunk in hard ground.
Afterward, in the car park heat, the gold-earring member caught Susan’s eye. “Your drafter writes like someone who’s seen a clipboard survive a mountain. Tell her the owl’s satisfied for now.”
Susan did not ask how the woman knew about mountains. She drove home with her hands steady on the wheel and walked into the kitchen like a person who still owned her weekends.
Helen only said, “Good,” and filed the adopted language beside Athena’s chalk-smell memory. Penny stamped a tiny wheat-and-owl mark in the margin of the house log, unofficial and perfect.
Kat poured Susan tea. Henry washed the mug Susan had used that morning without comment. Kevin kissed her temple at the sink and did not make a speech.
Primary held. Studio held. The vine could have Thursday. It did not get her marriage as rent.
