Chapter Twenty-One

Kevin at the University — Owls in the Agenda

Kevin’s meeting was supposed to be about timetables.

It became about cohesion.

A working group in a glass room that smelled of warm electronics and faint nectar-residue from someone’s discreet bottle. On the agenda: Community bonding initiatives — staff retention — optional lock-friendly residential weekends. Optional in font. Mandatory in tone.

Kevin thought of Susan’s pottery table. Of Henry’s not-everyone. Of a Fury saying lonely is for the mercy cafe.

He said, mild, “I’m going to read a short clause set into the minutes.”

Helen had written it. Athena had sharpened it. He read without naming either:

Cohesion initiatives shall not condition employment, progression, or social belonging on sexual access, unlocked status, or the dissolution of primary bonds. Monogamous-as-possible and selective medical boundaries are recognised accommodations. Analog-parent households are exempt from all scent, spend, and overnight protocols. Coercion dressed as community is out of policy.

Silence. Someone laughed once, nervous. Someone else said, “That’s a bit legalistic for culture-building.”

On the windowsill, an owl that had not been there when they sat down preened a wing. Only Kevin and one gold-wristed admin seemed to see it. The admin’s eyes narrowed; she typed faster.

“Table it for legal and occupational health,” the chair muttered.

“Table it with the clause in the minutes,” Kevin said. “I’m happy to be the difficult one. I’ve had practice this week.”

After, in the corridor, the gold-wristed admin caught his sleeve. “Your clause has friends in the Apollo liaison office. And in places that don’t use letterhead. Forward me the full draft. Quietly.”

Kevin walked out into heat that felt one degree less personal. He texted Susan held and Helen used the language and Henry nothing at all because the boys would be home in forty minutes and the message Henry needed was spaghetti and a door that shut.

On the lamppost by the terrace the owl landed long enough for Helen, watching from the box-room window, to incline her head. Then it was gone, leaving the air smelling of chalk and cold strategy.
